Get it from India. It will be much cheaper. It is better to go back for 2 years for a masters degree and come back. It is easy for IT folks to come back on a new H1B visa. For people in other professions it is difficult. You can even have your company transfer you to India for 2 years or take study leave.

You cannot keep GC out of equation when GC/non-GC decides your ability to get unemployment benefits, choice of jobs and many more aspects of your life.
If you leave the country, you lose the equity on the house. I don't know when you bought
the house. In the post credit bubble period, the lender will make sure you have enough equity that they are secure and you have skin in the game.
Bought my home in early 2008 on 100% financing (yeah, they had these crazy schemes back then!) before the economy tanked. So I havent put down any money. Even the closing costs were paid by the seller. For me its not an investment, but a place to live. So I am not worried about the equity. The home isnt a McMansion and the mortgage payment is manageable. When tax savings at year end are considered, it almost puts me on par with renting.
On the other hand, I dont put GC on a pedestal. I bought my home even before I had started GC process. To me it is not a life changing event like the day I was born or my wedding day or the birth day of my kid. Its something good to have for obvious benefits, but I am not holding my breath until I get it. Once again, I reiter that factoring GC into your decisions is a personal choice, and I dont do it. I am not banking on unemployment benefits or any other govt dole. Like I said, if anything were to go wrong and I had to leave the country for good, my lender will be the one taking the hit. This might not be the case in your situation and I can understand why GC would be so important then.

In short, what I am trying to say is members are doing what they can in these tough times. Definitely they can and will do more if we have some directions or flexible campaigns.
we have what we have in terms of participations, donations etc ..why not have an easier campaign (flower/letter) which will get maximum participation and also show that something is happening.
as for media campaign ..sooner or later more confident speakers will come forward (who knows ..maybe many present members are not confident speakers or media shy)
The problem that we (including myself) have is work life is more hectic and tense now, since layoffs are happening in front of our eyes. and hence if we have campaigns like going to DC or to go for media interviews ..it is very difficult.
Wow how did I miss this one. So you only want campaigns that are easy, flexible, not difficult, something we can do without moving our a$$, something that doesn't involve speaking with anyone including reporters, lawmakers/decision makers etc etc. Well thats too many specifications for how and which type of campaigns you want to participate. Do you expect Senators and Congressman to log on to this forum to find out the problems albertpinto is facing because he is a good guy, right?
I agree things are going to get real VERY VERY bad soon. Things that most us find difficult right now will sound like cake walk as compared to what we are about to experience. So hang tight, we are in for a ride that no one has experienced before. I think things will be so tough that in the future we will remember these times as good times. So design your specifications for the "easy" campaigns and feel good about writing on some blog expecting some Senator will read your post and notice your competence to FedEx you your green card. For now lets count those fantasy land easy campaign of yours.

Looks like there is not much focus on this thread now, we should really Bump this Thread up so as to get Maximun Visability on the home page.
This is our last chance to get the new bill approved so i would suggest to go full steam.
Who did you send the letter/petition? The reason I am asking so that I can update the list on page 1.

Thanks for your informed comments. Like you, I am also surprised to find many people in this forum, who are interested in fire arms.
I don't own a fire arm and not planning to while the immigration status is not yet Citizenship. I don't want the authorities to give another reason to look into my case. I just go for fishing once in a while.
But our family owns two guns in India and have worked with guns from childhood.
Another point is I am very much impressed with how the Americans manage wild life and the nature in general. They enjoy it while preserving it. India does neither. We just destroy it, and write eloquent speeches on nature protection.
Federal law does allow H-1Bs to purchase firearms if they have lived in the US (Same residence, if you move, the clock is reset) continuously (if you leave the country, the clock is again reset) for 90 days and fall under one of the 4 exceptions listed below.
- Possess a valid (unexpired) hunting license issued by any state in the US
- Are a Law enforcement officer from a foreign nation, here on official duty
- in the US to participate in a shooting sports competition
- get a waiver from the Attorney General
The easiest of these 4 exceptions is the Hunting license exception.
Once you meet the above mentioned criteria, you are okay, per federal law to possess a firearm. Doesn't matter what non-immigrant visa you are on (H-1B, F-1, AOS).
Next step is to check whether your state has additional restrictions. I don't think any states completely bars non-citizens from possessing firearms (atleast none of the states that I have lived in do), although some states have restrictions on the type of firearms non citizens can buy. e.g. in MA, non-citizens (including GC holders) can't buy handguns or high powered semi auto rifles (ARs, AKs) but they can buy non-large capacity rifles and shotguns.
As someone pointed out, trying out guns at a public range which has rentals is a great way to introduce oneself to the sport, learn basic firearm operation and safety, and to try a wide variety of guns and calibers.

My interpretation: the vote was not on Cornyn's amendment; in response to a Point of Order raised, there was a motion to waive the Budget Act for Cornyn's amendment (the Budget Act requires 60 "Yes" votes to bring to the floor amendments to appropriation bills); if 60 senators had voted "Yes" (and agreed to waive the Budget Act requirement for Cornyn's amendment), then a vote on the actual amendment would only have required a simple majority. But because only 55 voted "Yes", the amendment failed to obtain the waiver; it was out of order because it did not qualify as an amendment to this bill.
Because 40 Dems voted no on the waiver does not mean they are opposed to the amendment; they just did not want to vote on this amendment on this bill.

Come on.. we are not talking about hiring.. No company is waiting in line to hire anybody coming out from Aspen University with Masters Degree.
What we are talking here is whether One holding 3 yr bachelors Degree from India be eligible to apply under EB-2 category after completing Masters Degree from an accredited university.
If the PERM Job description says " Masters Degree"
GO home and stand in front of a mirror and ask yourself if your 3 year degree and a masters bought for 4k will get you a greencard in eb2.
