Plastic Resin Pellets Pollute Western Australian Beaches

Western Australian beaches are in the throws of an ecological disaster. Tiny pellets of plastic resin are in the environment which absorb industrial chemicals particularly pesticides. The pellets are a bi-product of plastic drink bottle manufacturing.

There is real danger that Bisphenol A will create estrogen leading to infertility. Bisphenol A was first found in plastic in the 1950s. Such plastic is now found everywhere. It is not known how or even if marine animals consume the plastic. Other chemicals, many estrogenic, are put into bottle plastic for flexibility, color and other properties. The chemicals are not fully absorbed in the plastic, so they migrate to the surface and escape. It was established several years ago that PCBs, DDT and HCH chemicals. all hormone disruptors. were in plastic resin pellets.

Australia is playing a "waiting game", watching to see what other countries do in regard to these pellets. Many people are not worrying because the pellets blend into the sand being small and a similar color. Stopping production in Australia will not do any good: many pellets drift here from other countries.

Timeless duty

The Duke of Edinburgh, who celebrates his 90th birthday on June 10, is the longest-serving consort in the history of the British monarchy. The service he has given to maintaining standards in men’s dress is, however, almost as notable as the duties he’s performed over the 63 years of his marriage to the Queen.
For six decades in the public eye, the Duke’s appearance has consistently been beyond reproach. According to Catherine Hayward, Esquire magazine’s fashion director: “Prince Philip’s dress code is everything you expect from the Queen’s consort – sober, discreet, distinguished.” The Duke’s dress provides a model for the ideal business outfit, an ostensibly unremarkable combination of a single-breasted blue or grey suit with pale blue or white shirt, patterned silk tie and black shoes. The only decorative element is a crisply folded white pocket square.
It is a uniform so perfectly restrained that it defies criticism. For that reason it is much emulated by the current generation of male politicians: David Cameron, Barack Obama, Tony Blair and Nick Clegg all dress in a similar way. While politicians are, however, reluctant to appear interested in clothes, the Duke’s patronage of Savile Row is no secret. This, unsurprisingly, pleases Mark Henderson, chairman of the tailor’s association Savile Row Bespoke. “There is the most wonderful low-key smartness about the way he dresses,” he says.
The source of that smartness, at least for the past 45 years, is the tailor John Kent, of Kent, Haste & Lachter. This relationship began in the early 1960s when Kent joined Hawes & Curtis and, as “undercutter”, made the Duke’s trousers. After Kent was fully trained he became the Duke’s tailor, and retained him as a client when he set up on his own in 1986. Kent’s current firm opened for business last year and quickly received the royal warrant. “He’s not a great lover of Christmas tree bits,” Kent says, meaning that the styling is austere. “Single-breasted jackets; two-button front; four-button cuffs; no vents except on shooting stuff; no flaps on the pocket, just jetted; classic trousers – not baggy but with four full pleats.”
It is these unfussy details, as well as the team of staff dedicated to looking after the Duke’s wardrobe – Kent makes intriguing mention of a “brushing room”, where his clothes are stored and cared for – that make his appearance impeccable. But it is the constancy of the Duke’s clothes that make him so discreetly influential. In the time that he’s been at the Queen’s side, various waves of youth culture have crashed over men’s dress, from rock ’n’ roll to hip-hop, via the hippy period and the new romantics. Meanwhile men’s fashion has been deconstructed by Giorgio Armani, seen its proportions reinvented by Yohji Yamamoto, been pared back by Helmut Lang and then Hedi Slimane, before Tom Ford set out to inspire a renaissance of 1970s ostentation. Through this tumult, the Duke has slimmed down the cut of his trousers and lengthened the line of his lapels.
Depending on one’s view of men’s fashion, it is either inspiring or depressing to think that the Duke’s clothes are perennially relevant, despite being, in some cases, four decades old. Robert Johnston, GQ magazine’s associate style editor and a fan of fashion’s restlessness, is not paying the Duke a compliment when he notes that: “He hasn’t changed the way he’s dressed since he married the Queen.” To Johnston, the Duke’s “playing it safe” is a failing. Esquire’s Hayward disagrees: “Sticking with the classics means that his outfits have never really dated, so after 60 years in the public eye there have been no fashion faux pas.”
Given the Duke’s interest in clothes, it is instructive to compare his style to that of his eldest son. It is clear that the Prince of Wales has something of a dandyish streak, with his penchant for soft-shouldered, double-breasted suits and overcoats, colourful pocket squares worn puffed, and turn-ups. There are echoes of the way that the Duke of Windsor rejected the sartorial orthodoxies of his father, King George V.
Asked if the Duke ever wears casual clothes, his tailor pauses, before dryly replying: “We’ve made him lightweight cotton suits for when he goes to the tropics.” Mark Henderson of Savile Row Bespoke summarises the exemplary nature of the Duke’s clothes: “In many ways he is the archetypal British gentleman, reminding us that style is permanent.”

Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/20/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/20/2011Our Italian tipsters seem to be on vacation, so news from the Mediterranean is rather scanty tonight. Fjordman, however, has made up for it with his tips on science, the financial crisis, and EU political affairs.

The crisis in the eurozone continues to intensify. The other nations of the EU have stepped up the pressure on Greece to form a national unity coalition and institute the austerity measures necessary to earn a new bailout. The euro countries are obviously worried about a possible Greek default, and the IMF has told the EU in no uncertain terms that it must achieve fuller “integration” and solve the debt problem, or risk damaging the world economy.

Meanwhile, Moody’s says that it may have to downgrade Italian debt as a result of the current economic situation. This announcement caused the Italian stock market to plunge 2%.

In other news, a nine-year-old girl was kidnapped in Pakistan while on her way to school and forced to wear a suicide bomb belt by terrorists who wanted to use her in a terror attack. She escaped, however, and reached safety before her belt could explode.

To see the headlines and the articles, open the full news post.

Thanks to AC, Egghead, Fjordman, Gaia, Steen, Vlad Tepes, and all the other tipsters who sent these in.

Commenters are advised to leave their comments at this post (rather than with the news articles) so that they are more easily accessible.

Malta refugees #4

The Mediterranean refugee crisis has become so large that Hollywood starlets are beginning to take notice. I’ll have more to say on this topic later on in the post, but first the latest news on the boat people.

A ship from the Polish navy — which is in the Mediterranean as a part of the NATO air war against Libya — rescued an unspecified of culture enrichers trying to cross over to Spain in a dinghy. The Poles helped them reach their destination:

Polish Navy Rescues African Migrants Dingy From Mediterranean

The Polish navy has rescued a group floating on a dingy in the Mediterranean, who were trying to escape the social upheavals in North Africa, it was reported Friday morning.

The group was transported to shore in Spain and given over to local authorities.

On Thursday evening the German mine-hunter Datteln spotted a group of people floating on a small vessel at a distance of about 80 km from the coast of Spain.

The emigrants were in good condition, but feared that their boat may start to sink at any moment.

The rescue operation was coordinated by the ship Admiral Xawery Czernicki, in the area as part of NATO-led anti-terrorist operations in the region.

Meanwhile the United Nations is once again hectoring the EU over its treatment of the Mediterranean refugees:

UN Urges Refugee ‘Solidarity’ Within European Union

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, has called for “solidarity” within the EU to deal with an influx of migrants to the bloc.

Mr Guterres was speaking on Italy’s island of Lampedusa, where thousands of north African migrants, including many Libyans, have arrived recently.

But he said that “for Europe as a whole it is a drop in the ocean”, saying that many migrants had gone elsewhere.

[…]

Mr Guterres’s visit to Lampedusa — a tiny island in the Mediterranean — is to see for himself the crowded conditions faced by the migrants.

More than 40,000 refugees, including a large number of Libyans, have descended on the tiny island, often making the crossing in crowded, unsafe boats.

Some have been escaping the violence in north Africa, whilst many have seen an opportunity to get into the EU.

The next sentence is disingenuous at best:
“When one looks at the situation in Libya, about one million people left Libya after the conflict started and less than 2% came to Europe. So, sometimes the debate in Europe is — in my opinion — a debate that doesn’t correspond to the reality,” Mr Guterres said.

First of all, as this article notes, the number of refugees that has landed in Europe so far this year is more than 40,000. As a matter of fact, more than 45,000 have landed in Italy alone. Reliable numbers for Greece, Malta, France, and Spain are not available, but they are likely to exceed 10,000. This means that 55,000 refugees, or 5.5% of the total, have landed in Europe so far.

Secondly, the vast majority of the rest are attempting to make their way home to countries further south, or are refugees just across the border from their homeland. Many of those will relocate fairly quickly.

This is hardly the same issue as it is for Europe, which is required to expend large sums maintaining the migrants — probably over €10,000 per enricher just in the early stages of the enrichment process — whereas none of the African countries is doing anything similar.

So the reality is that the current crisis can have devastating economic consequences, particularly for Italy, if it continues indefinitely.

At least Mr. Guterres admits that Lampedusa has a problem on its hands:
He admitted that “for a small island like Lampedusa, to have such a large number of people coming is a huge pressure”.

But he stressed: “I believe that with adequate forms of solidarity this challenge can be overcome.”

Thousands of migrants have been sent to camps on mainland Italy, leading to a political row with other EU countries which fear the migrants may cross their borders.

Now we come to the celebrity angle: Angelina Jolie has taken up the cause of the migrants and is visiting Lampedusa. According to CBS News:

Jolie, UNHCR Head Visit Island Swamped by Migrants

Lampedusa, Italy (AP) — The tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, which has been overwhelmed in recent months by refugees fleeing Tunisia and Libya, is getting some VIP visitors: U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie and the U.N. refugee chief.

Refugee chief Antonio Guterres arrived in Lampedusa on Sunday a few hours ahead of Jolie, who last week traveled to Turkey’s border with Syria to meet some of the thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict there.

Guterres has thanked Lampedusa residents for welcoming the migrants and urged Europe to continue keeping its doors open.

He says the debate raging in Europe about immigration “doesn’t correspond to the reality” given that the number of migrants who have actually arrived is tiny compared to the numbers who have gone elsewhere.

Finally, for some light relief, not all the migrants arriving in Lampedusa are human:

The Latest Illegal Immigrant to Land in Lampedusa Had Four Legs

A sheep that crossed the sea from Tunisia adds a light twist to the daily human drama of immigrants landing on the Italian island of Lampedusa. But the warmth doesn’t last.

Among the cries of joy and relief from the Tunisian refugees on the dock of this tiny Italian island, a very different voice joined in: a sheep bleating — almost as if to say: “I made it too!”

Authorities had rescued the immigrants, like so many before near Lampedusa, from a 10-meter long fishing boat. The Tunisian vessel was carrying 12 men, six women, a nine-year-old boy… and yes, one sheep. It was white, curly-haired, and an illegal immigrant like all the others. The sheep had been brought along to supply fresh milk for the boy.

The boat arrived in the harbor, with a show of 19 pairs of hands raised in the “V” sign for victory, and a triumphal pair of animal ears. “There is a sheep aboard,” said one of the rescuers by radio to the harbor police station. “What..?” the operator asked. “A sheep,” the policeman replied. It can happen on this island, the crossroads between two continents, the landing place for people who leave North Africa to run away from hunger, and to find a new place for their children to live.

You can read more about the immigrant sheep at the original article.

There’s only one thing I’m wondering: does anybody know whether the sheep was trying to enter Italy as a part of the Spousal Reunion Program?

Thanks for your reply. Everybody else is just teasing and making fun instead of answering a simple question.

    (1) Are these steps taken in a sequence?
    (2) Does USCIS update the status of our file so that we know where we are i.e whether our file is stuck FBI Name check or FBI Fingerprint Check, etc..

I didn't think my answers were making fun or teasing anyone - sorry if you felt that way, I didn't mean them to be interpreted like that.

The main problem is that no one really knows for sure whether these steps are taken in sequence. There is little to no transparency. There are procedures, but we can not guarantee that they are followed.

To answer your second part. No, I don't believe there are any standard updates that indicate this, but I could be wrong. I think that there is an update if you clear it, but not if you are stuck in it. Make sense? Pappu has an excellent post that details the name check process http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12000

To answer nlssubbu with the query about the "pre-approval" - I don't think it is a 1 time thing. Its a fairly standard USCIS practice. I have a link somewhere to the IO AOS processing manual. If I can find it I'll post it here.

Do I think they have enough resources to process them all? Absolutely not, but I doubt there will be a rush considering PDs won't be current for a while (esp eb3)

I agree, you will be competing with all the illegals. But.....

    1. How likely are they to file their apps on the first allowable day that USCIS will accept the applications? Not very. Most of us know what's going on and will be ready to send in our apps first. Ofcourse if some EB based guy is pottering around instead of moving fast, thats his problem.

    2. How many illegals can afford the high priced attorneys? Most of these poor guys dont know to speak, read or write english, forget about filing out USCIS forms.

    3. How many illegals maintain perfect records of their time and can recreate a paper trail of the time they spent in the US. I certainly can and most legal wannabe immigrants can definitely prove the time they have been here (paystubs, utility bills, credit card statements, bank statements, etc.)

The point I am making is - this is the best option I have seen in a long time. Even the stupid point based system had its drawbacks. This is unconditional. It will get vast support from the hispanic community also. The UK has the same thing. Be on a work permit for 5 years and then you are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency. I believe there is also some clause in the UK system that states that you have to have been in the UK illegally for 10 years as against 5 years for a legal immigrant. I'm sure setting the illegal bar at 10 years and legal bar at 5 would be acceptable for most people.

If we reapply under this section, we will be competing with the massive illegal-to-AOS guys based on our Receipt date for adjudication.

Now this seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel ( not of an incoming train. hope so)

Lets support this bill, there is a website I am trying to remeber the address, I heard while driving on kfyi radio station, where all the bills are listed and people can poll on bills and this will help the lawmakers to find what bill is popular and which one is not.

I'll try to find and post it on the forum, we can poll and support this bill.

    Hello there ,

From now onwards visa dates will be stable. I mean little or big but most of time forward jump .. Not a big swing that we saw for couple of years.

What bothers me is SPILL OVER. CIS told that EB2 India and China is under their annual limit.EB2 ROW has very less labor compare to last years. For first quarter they had approx 700 LC. if you apply same math then 2800 ~ 3000 LC and 7500 visa needed for all EB2 Row.

Total EB2 has 40k. India and china consume 6k together. Now there should be SPILL of 24k visas to Eb2 India and china.

I am not talking about EB1 Spill ( Which is current till date ) . VO told that EB4 will have cutoff date for Still there can be spill from Eb5.

If no SPILL THEN DATE WILL NOT MOVE SINGLE DAY IN SEP. IF SPILL FROM EB2 only then it will move till MID 2004 . and If more spill then I see we will crossing 2004.

Try to respect people who are trying to 'buy' an MS degree for the purpose of greencard ? Instead of feeling sorry for their situation, you should feel sorry for the legit EB2 applicant who these guys screw up by taking this backdoor approach.

If your argument is that after holding a US Masters , OP will not be a legit EB2 applicant, even you are not legit. Go get some education

The number of foreign students has definitely increased since then. The quota is not that
big, so even a small increase like say 10% in the number of foreign students is enough to
    swamp the quota.

These numbers are truly historic," says Goli Ameri, assistant secretary of State for educational and cultural affairs. "We haven't just covered lost ground we have now surpassed" previous records.

Plus more than enrollment, it is the economy that governs how soon the quota is reached. In my experience, the economy

below the real market wage, and it will be business as usual. Again, this is the

Thanks! That's helpful... from what you say, sounds like PD is still quite important. RD comes into the picture only after the PD becomes current. However, if a range of PD's are current, then they would sort those by RD and not by PD.

For eg, if they move the dates forward by a year, and Jan 04 and Jan 05 are both now current, a person with PD of Jan 05 but an earlier RD would still get processed prior to an application with PD Jan 04 and a later RD (according to the FIFO principle)...

you are right there but USICS does not follow any principle so in your range person with Jan 05 PD could be last (Decorator pattern).

I hope you are wrong about this. I do not see anything on the Approved AP that it should has been used for "humanitarian" purpose. It just mentions that the intention of AP is to allow the AOS applicant to return after temporary travel outside US. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You are absolutly incorrect. Unfortunatly most lawyer or their web sites do not explain the limitation of "parole". Because most of the CBP at POE are flexible; that does not mean that the law is flexible. This is what the instruction for AP in the form.

"Advance parole is an extraordinary measure used sparingly to bring an otherwise inadmissible alien to the United States for a temporary period of time due to a compelling emergency. Advance parole cannot be used to circumvent the normal visa issuing procedures and is not a means to bypass delays in visa issuance."

Recently I returned after a one month trip to India. At DC airport the CBP secondary inspection officer grilled us rough. First he called my wife and asked why did we leave US. She told that since my parents are old and not in good health we visited them. Then he started asking for documents proving it. And told us that without documents he won't let us enter. He went on to say that AP is only on humanitarian basis and unless CBP officer is satisfied with proof they cannot allow AP holder to enter. Finally after convincing him for another 30 min he let us in.
This was a really shocking experience. Are employment based GC's AP supposed to be treated like humanitarian AP? or was the CBP officer over reacting? Gurus please throw some light.

msgs like this help establish the notion that this is an indian website dedicated to indian immigration issues. I didnt see any post wishing happy Eid/ Eid Mubarak nor did I notice last year that anyone wished a Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays, nor do we wish our Chinese friends a Happy Chinese New Year.

good point. let's start doing it then...
just my opinion..but festive occasions bind us as a community and yes that includes Eid and Christmas and the Chinese new year.
Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil, let's hope we can all bask soon in a festival of lights by getting some relief from retrogression....

actually...and this is just me nitpicking now...Diwali is technically a Hindu festival not an Indian festival (since 20% of Indians are not Hindu), so the complaint may be more accurate if you point to the religious aspect...
Of course it is widely celebrated in India...and the UK and going by the White house greetings and the huge melas ...in the US :-)
